Giving a person a dollar was WAY harder than I imagined it would be. I was not able to give a single person the dollar. I tried different tactics and said different things, but towards the end I got desperate. I would say, "Please take this dollar," and people continued to say no. My predictions could not have been more incorrect because I thought it would be easy to approach strangers and give them money. Maybe I should have started out asking them how they were and how there day was going instead of trying to get the dollar out of my hands as soon as I made eye contact with a person. I tried to be nice, but maybe I needed to be nicer and more easygoing. I even tried to convince people that they were missing out on the dollar that would win them the lottery. They still said no. I learned a lot from this experience, and it is to talk to a customer and get to know them before asking something of them, even if it is asking them to take a free dollar.

Free Money
For this assignment, I will go to a supermarket, and I will approach the people coming in to do their shopping because they won't expect it. . To start the conversation, I will say, "Hello, would you you like this free dollar?" If they say yes, I will give them a dollar, thanking them. My plan for the conversation is to keep it simple and say that I wanted to be nice by giving people a dollar. Out of five attempts, I feel like I will be able to give all the dollars away, after all, it is free money.

Hi Alexandra, I completely understand you, especially with this assignment and trying to give away $5. I think a supermarket was a smart idea too since a lot of students go to grocery stores and have the mentality of walking in food-less and walking out with their hands full. My approach was different. I did this in Turlington and used two methods. One being straight forward and the other one wishing students good luck on midterms. The second approach worked best in giving away money. When you have the chance, check out my blog: http://kmglickman.blogspot.com/2016/02/free-money.html
ReplyDeleteI completely understand why people wouldn't accept the money. While I didn't do this assignment, I still thought that not many people would accept the money. I know that if someone came up to me and offered me a dollar with a camera on me in the background I wouldn't accept it due to all those prank videos out there. I don't think it was a reflection on your social skills at all rather just people being cautious. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHi Alexandra!
ReplyDeleteI think everyone initially thought that everyone would take money, but it's funny how some people refused. Your tone in the first video might have startled the girl but she still took the money! I probably would have felt uncomfortable if someone was filming me and asking if I wanted a dollar. It seems like an odd project, but it was cool of you to go out and do it! I wasn't able to do the assignment myself.
Good job Alexandra!
I think you had a great idea to stand outside of a grocery store. It is a great place where people are in a way, forced to walk past you, which can also be a negative. It might make people more skeptical, because they are used to seeing people selling merchandise outside. Overall, great job with the assignment.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if i was in this situation, i would be willing to take the money. Who would not take a free dollar right? But then again, i have never been asked to take free money whilst having a camera record the situation. I think it would be a pretty awkward situation for myself, to be confronted to take an object with a camera involved. But overall good job with this assignment!
ReplyDeleteHi Alexandra,
ReplyDeleteFor this assignment it was perceived a lot different. Many thought that the people would take the money, but in reality it was a different story. This is a similar story to people who are trying to make consumers try their product, and the majority of the time they do not try the product.
My blog: I was unable to finish this assignment.
Hey Alexandra, you were very forceful in trying to give your dollar away. That was how my first to attempts at this were and I was not able to give the dollar away even though it was free! My next three attempts I simply just said free dollar and it seemed to be less awkward for the person receiving the gift.
