Interviewing Customers No. 2

Fine tune your Opportunity: Last week, I came up with the simple idea to add more power outlets and power chords to the library at the University of Florida. After careful consideration, I decided I wanted to create a portable power outlet for students. If they need one, they could simply pick it up from a charging station and carry anywhere in the library with them. All they would need to do is put back when they left the library. They could be orange and blue to look cool and better for the University of Florida. I think it would be really helpful because kids wouldn't have to move around and sit in a place where they wouldn't normally study just because there was a power outlet there. They could sit anywhere they wanted and could still get their work done.

Fine tune the who: I didn't change the people I talked to. I knew since I was asking questions about their time at the library and what they disliked about it, I needed to ask college students.

Tweaking your interview questions: I didn't change my questions all too much, I just added one more, "Do you wish there were more outlets or that they were easier to move around?"

What I learned about my opportunity was that it was very basic and I almost wanted to change it, but then when I asked my new question, I got a lot of positive feed back from. Portable chargers would be ideal in the libraries.

Three tips I would give to students taking this class in the future semesters are to not be afraid to talk to people because they are really easygoing and nice. I would say to be respectful of people's responses and to make sure your body language is positive. Finally, have a plan and make sure you execute it when you are interviewing the customers.

  1. Nice Alex,
I like this idea a lot, great concept. I have no idea how you will create the technology to make it work but if you research guys like Nikola Tesla you might be able to glean a way to do it using one of his patents. Wireless energy was one of his greatest research topics. The idea of having a portable outlet to charge your laptop and other devices it definitely something I'd like to see in the future. Here is my blog idea, check it out if you get the opportunity. http://dcbostwick.blogspot.com/2016/02/interview-customer-2.html

  2. Hey Alex,

I think your opportunity is a great idea! I personally have had trouble with finding easily accessible power outlets in the library in the past, so I can totally relate. I especially like the idea of making the portable outlets orange and blue, both because they would stick out and be easy to spot and obviously because GO GATORS. I think you did a great job of adapting during questioning, which I personally had trouble with in my interview. Overall, I think you were comfortable and professional in your interviews, which is important, although you were giggling a bit in the last one (I did that too because I was nervous).

Here are my second set of interviews if you would like to check them out:

  3. Hey Alex,

Whenever I get to the library, the first thing I look for is a open outlet for my laptop. However, I can definitely agree with you that there is a shortage of open outlets. In some parts of the library, its even blocked! When I came across you idea, I loved it and thought we really need to implement this portable outlets you speak of. The color idea is also brilliant and would love to see it in the near future. Your interviews seem very professionally done and the points were very direct and easy to understand. Also, I don't know if the postures were all forced by you but I liked how everyone had the same stance! Great assignment post and I hope to run into your post again soon.
